The Northeastern Arts & Sciences Charter School (NAS) was seeking approval to open in the former St. Francis of Assisi

Education approved eight new Charter Schools, but the list did not
include NAS or 34 other charters with pending applications.
While the NAS application was pending, Ridgefield Park education
officials had expressed great concern regarding the impact this charter
would have on its school district and petitioned the New Jersey
Department

of Education (DOE)to deny the NAS application. If NAS had received
approval, Ridgefield Park would have lost approximately $10,000 from its
school budget

Notably, the purpose articulated in the NAS application was

service students from neighboring Hackensack "where there is a
significant achievement gap between its district students and the
state." Notwithstanding the intended purpose of the charter, Ridgefield
Park residents would have had

Ridgefield Park is deemed a High Performing School District

School of Excellence Award recipients.
Ridgefield Park Superintendent Christopher Onorato had

concern that NAS would not offer as "complete or varied" an education
as offered by the district. On Jan. 20 the DOE issued a press release
which stated: "Approval decisions are made based on the quality of the
proposed educational

Onorato responded and said, "From the perspective

Commissioner of Education considered that there was no the need for the
proposed school in our community."
State Assembly members Gary Schaer and Marlene Carride had

Ridgefield Park's concerns, and were "interested and anxious to do what
we could to articulate the district's concerns to Trenton." Together
they reached out to contacts in the DOE.
"The district had done an excellent job of making the issues known to
the Department of Education;

their position and were ultimately helpful to the process," Assemblyman
Schaer commented.
Also responding to the state's approval of only eight new charter
schools,

Association (NJCSA), said, "The NJCSA has been consistent in its
position that only applicants who have demonstrated the capacity and
commitment to creating top-performing public charter schools should be
approved.
